What do we do?

With the Overijssel Nature Fund, Landschap Overijssel aims to protect and improve as much nature as possible. The fund was established to acquire land, and anyone can buy a square meter of nature starting at €7.50. This way, everyone contributes to nature conservation.

Landschap Overijssel ensures that all the money from the Overijssel Nature Fund is used to purchase, manage, and protect nature. The acquired land will always remain protected.

Why is this important?

Nature in Overijssel is struggling due to drought, pollution, agricultural intensification, and urbanization. These factors cause habitats for plants and animals to shrink, and important parts of the landscape, such as hedges and ditches, to disappear. These elements are vital for many animals, providing food, protection, and space to breed. The loss of these elements threatens biodiversity and weakens ecosystems, which is harmful to nature as well as human health.

By purchasing land, nature areas become larger and more interconnected. This provides better protection against external influences such as drought and pollution. It also enlarges and calms habitats for plants and animals, allowing animals to migrate and reproduce more effectively. This benefits species like the grass snake, stoat, viviparous lizard, and otter.

Impact

With the fund, valuable lands can be purchased, and nature can be protected. This helps local biodiversity and provides a safe place for endangered species. Success stories, such as the restoration of De Vledders and Leijerhooilanden, demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. Rare birds, such as the crane and the snipe, have found a home here.

De Vledders and Leijerhooilanden are nature reserves that have been expanded and redeveloped by Landschap Overijssel through land acquisition. Due to the size and connected layout of the area, it is better protected against drought and nitrogen pollution. It provides a safe haven for many species and helps preserve biodiversity. This shows the importance of land acquisition for nature conservation. The restoration has led to the return of rare birds, such as the spotted crake, corncrake, and a few cranes. The abundance of insects and the tranquility in the area create ideal conditions for these birds.

How do we work?

Landschap Overijssel purchases important pieces of land with the help of donations to the Nature Fund. This allows Landschap Overijssel to act quickly when a suitable location becomes available. The management and protection of these nature areas are well arranged.
