The "Creation of Amphibian Ponds" project focuses on building new ponds in Brabant to restore the habitats of endangered amphibian species. Many species, such as the great crested newt and tree frog, rely on still water for breeding. Unfortunately, much of their natural habitat has been lost due to land reclamation and urbanization.
This project aims to create new ponds that are essential for the survival of these species. The ponds will be constructed in areas of Brabant where the natural conditions are suitable for amphibians. In addition to amphibians, other species like dragonflies, swallows, and bats also benefit from these water sources, using the ponds as feeding, drinking, and bathing spots.
Each pond costs approximately €1500 to construct, and ongoing maintenance is also ensured. With your support, we can restore these valuable ecosystems and enhance biodiversity in Brabant.
This project is critical because many amphibian species have drastically declined due to the loss of their habitats. Small water bodies, such as ponds, are vital for the reproduction of these species. In Brabant, thirteen amphibian species still exist, including the rare tree frog and garlic toad, both of which depend on ponds.
Without these ponds, these species cannot survive. Ponds are also essential for other wildlife, such as dragonflies, bats, and swallows. By investing in the creation of new ponds, you not only help increase biodiversity but also contribute to the protection of endangered species and the restoration of a healthy ecosystem.
The construction of the ponds takes place throughout the year, except during the amphibian mating season in spring. Most ponds are built between August and October when the majority of amphibians have left the ponds, and insect larvae have matured. The exact locations are carefully selected based on the suitability of the terrain to support amphibians.
Brabants Landschap collaborates with local experts and volunteers to create and maintain the ponds. Once a pond is established, it is regularly monitored and maintained to ensure it remains suitable for amphibian breeding and other species.
Brabants Landschap, founded in 1932, is committed to preserving nature, landscapes, and heritage in Brabant. The organization protects and manages valuable nature areas and cultural landscapes, including forests, heathlands, and ponds, and works to enhance biodiversity. With the help of thousands of volunteers and donors, Brabants Landschap ensures the maintenance and restoration of nature areas and heritage sites, with the goal of passing them on to future generations. They also provide guidance to landowners and open nature areas for recreational use.
These projects contribute to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals.
