A durable, 100% pure natural oil.SKOTTSBERG® Burning Oil is a natural oil of burning in cast iron and sheet metal pans without a synthetic or enamel non-stick coating. By burning in the pans with this oil you create a natural non-stick layer in your pan. This so-called patina layer also develops automatically during frequent frying in the pan and by pre-burning the pan yourself you speed up this process. It also protects the pan against rust. If the patina layer is damaged you can easily restore it yourself by re-firing the pan. Main features:

What is a patina layer?
SKOTTSBERG® cast iron pans are pre-burned in, using only natural oil. This creates a natural non-stick coating. This patina layer is created by heating the pan with a thin layer of SKOTTSBERG® Inbrand oil until the pan begins to smoke. This Inbrand oil is available separately and is the best way to burn in SKOTTSBERG® pans. Exposure to high temperatures breaks down long chains of fat molecules into short-chain polymers that bind with naturally produced carbon and bright iron, creating a type of glaze.This is the patina layer that forms after firing these pans and it has smooth, non-stick properties similar to a synthetic non-stick coating, such as Teflon. It also forms a natural barrier between the air and the bare iron in your pan and acts as the first line of defense against rust. It is definitely advisable to once again self-fire the pan before its first use. To do this, read carefully the instructions attached to the pan.
